Redcar's South GareFishing is very popular along the coast and for many a source of income. The most popular areas for fishing in the borough are South Gare, Redcar, Saltburn and Staithes.

South Gare breakwater as popular for fishing, but caution is needed when weather conditions are not favourable. In the winter months the main catches are Codling, Whiting, Coalfish and Flounder and during the summer months Mackerel.

Redcar offers a range of choices for fishing, from flat sandy beaches to heavy rocky gullies. Codling, Whiting, Coalfish, Flounder and bass are the catches but you can also find crab and lobster.

Saltburn is a very popular destination for all year round fishing.

The Pier tends to be the favourite venue as the high tide makes fishing in deeper water more attractive.

Other popular fishing venues in the borough include Scaling Dam and Lockwood Beck. Scaling Dam is the largest stretch of water in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park; the reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout. Fishing permits are acquired from the fishing lodge located at the reservoir.

Lockwood Beck is a 60-acre fishery set in the woodlands on the fringe of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This venue is suitable for fly-fishing only.
