Railway....

The North East coast was transformed by the development of the railways. Towns such as Saltburn-by-the-Sea owe their very existance to this new, revolutionary method of transport.

The extension of the Stockton and Darlington Railway from Middlesbrough to Redcar had already made access to the bracing sea air of Redcar available; when in 1861 a further extension to Saltburn-by-the-Sea was opened. The 'sea-side' became highly fashionable and hugely popular. Now the public had a choice of destinations, the rapidly developing Redcar, or the newly constructed Saltburn-by-the-Sea. All kinds of leisure facilities, guesthouses and hotels appeared to accommodate the visitors that the railway brought.
