The area abounds with managed interpretive countryside sites offering an insight into the natural environment and is the most wooded of all the Boroughs in the Tees Valley, offering perfect locations where you can walk, watch for wildlife, picnic or just enjoy the environment.
Many of the countryside sites have circular walks, trails, regular activities and events for all the family. Choose from Errington Wood, Saltburn Valley, Lazenby Banks, Flatts Lane, Guisborough Forest & Walkway, Roseberry Topping and Clarksons Wood.
Errington Wood is situated on the hillside above New Marske, providing a network of footpaths that wind up through the woodland and give excellent views over the Tees Bay from the high point.
Rifts Wood is a popular area situated to the North of the valley gardens at Saltburn.
Hazelgrove is a small wooded valley to the rear of the caravan site at Saltburn, the mature trees form a small oasis for wild birds on migration, a wide range of natural herbs and shrubs provide feeding and breeding areas for song birds during the summer months.
The "Donkey path bridleway" forms a vital access route from Marine parade the coast.
Whitecliff Wood and Clarksons Wood forms a gateway to the wider Kilton Valley, these ancient woodlands harbour rare species including small Leafed Lime, and Spindle.
Rosecroft and Loftus Wood can be found to the South of Loftus West and East of Rosecroft lane. These quaint sites are valued for their picturesque and rights of way leading to the wider countryside.
Smaller woodland sites found within the borough include;- Deepdale Wood Loftus, Spook Wood Saltburn, and the Fox Covert at Marske.
The Eston Hills are situated to the south of the Middlesbrough suburbs of Eston and Normanby, and are a prominent feature on within Tees Valley. They have a rich history, from Bronze Age settlements to mining in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and boast a variety of wildlife. From the top of the escarpment there are panoramic views to the north across Teesside to the Durham Hills, and west to the Pennines. The North York Moors are visible to the south.
