Within Redcar & Cleveland there are many attractions to suit all tastes, whether you are interested in Maritime, Industrial or Natural Heritage then Redcar & Cleveland is the location for you.
Each year the unique appeal and contrasts of Redcar & Cleveland attract more and more visitors and holidaymakers. Whether you're here just for a day or on a longer stay, the first place you'll head for is most likely the coast. And why not? It rightly deserves its status as a Heritage Coast.
At Redcar, for example you'll discover a family resort with flat sandy beaches which stretch all the way down the coast to Saltburn. Here the elegant Victorian town with darker smuggling connections marks a change in the coastal landscape; from sandy beaches to a land of rocky sea cliffs.
You can climb to the highest point on the entire east coast of England at Boulby, but to really enjoy the coastal scenery take a walk along the famous clifftop Cleveland Way footpath which runs the length of the coast from Saltburn. You'll be in good company too, because one of Cleveland's most famous sons - Captain James Cook - had his first glimpse of the sea from these cliffs. The Cook Country Tour provides a fascinating way to trace the great explorer's local connections in more detail visiting many of the museums and attractions devoted to him.
Inland from the rugged cliffs and weathered stone cottages of seaside villages, you'll discover a different but no less dramatic landscape. Uncrowded roads lead to the heather-clad moorland of the North York Moors National Park rising some 1,400ft above the sea. Narrow winding roads will lead you from the dales to moor tops where the views are, quite simply , breathtaking. This is an area of legend which has changed little in over one thousand years. Here you can truly get away from it all and relax in the splendid isolation of the moorland wilderness, or take off into quiet forests, dales and pleasant villages and market towns.
The moors and coast offer excellent opportunities for outdoor activities such as walking, angling, cycling, horse riding, golf, watersports and grouse shooting.
Mueums, country houses, heritage sites and ancient monuments are all here alongside all the family fun of the traditional seaside attractions you'd expect on a day out in Redcar and Cleveland - you'll be spoiled for choice!
Go underground at the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum. Or see the world's oldest surviving lifeboat at the RNLI "Zetland" Museum in Redcar. Go horseracing at Redcar too, ride the oldest Clifflift railway at Saltburn, or visit the colourful market at Guisborough and take in the magnificent 12th century Priory ruins close by.
Whatever your interests, whenever you visit, you'll find an experience to remember..... for all the right reasons.
